Health Center USA is a partnership initiative of Iowa City’s three hospitals, the Iowa City Area Chamber of Commerce and the Iowa City/Coralville Convention and Visitors Bureau. The goal is to ensure that all visiting patients and their accompanying family members receive top-notch service both within the hospitals and out in the community.

Every year, the three hospitals host approximately 770,000 medical visits from outside of Johnson County. Accordingly, it is imperative that the Iowa City area continue to build on its reputation as a premier health care center through a cooperative public-private effort, which focuses on the needs of these individuals and their families during their visit to our community. Health care is the largest industry in Iowa City, and because most health care visits are now on an outpatient basis, our local business community, including hotels and restaurants, stands to benefit significantly from offering quality services to our medical-related visitors in a comforting and non-threatening environment.

Below are some of the activities the HCUSA partners have undertaken over the last few years:

1997
Conducted patient focus groups at each hospital to find out how to better meet the needs of visiting patients.

1997, 1999
Published economic impact studies of health care on Johnson County.

1999
Hosted Disney Institute’s Keys to Customer Service Excellence for area hospital employees and area businesses.

2000, 2001
Published two Patient and Family Guest Books with maps and pertinent information for visiting patients and family members.

2002
Developed a new Web site that allows guests to plan a visit to the area, building a custom miniguide from a database of local information.

2003
Cooperated with the Iowa City/Coralville Convention and Visitors Bureau to produce a visitors guide with a special health care section targeted toward visiting patients.
